Thermochromism applied to Transportation Engineering: asphalt roads and paints

Abstract Thermochromic materials change their optical response to temperature reversibly. This study explores the application of thermochromism road engineering, which is still incipient in this area, from two perspectives. The first one about development functionalized markings (FRM) working as thermochromic sensors alert presence ice on and, way, improve safety. second concerns functionalization asphalt pavements for reversible color at high temperatures reduce energy absorption form heat mitigate Urban Heat Islands (UHI) effect. For FRM, thermocapsules were added into acrylic ink, applied an AC10 mixture, submitted and low temperatures, visually characterized. aiming UHI reduction, solutions (TS) containing thermocapsules, dye, resin superficially sprayed AC10, Quick Ultraviolet Accelerated Weathering Test (QUV) was performed with subsequent Colorimetry Analysis, where coordinates defined by Comissione Internationale de l' Éclairage (CIE) measured. results show that it possible functionalize marks work a sensor. Also, property can be improved synthesizing or using TT closer water melting point. also indicate pavement surface spraying TS points out higher luminosity terms coordinate, intended mitigation absorption, consequently mitigating UHI.
